Meet the USMNT’s FIFA World Cup Opponents
Breaking down the strengths, weaknesses, and key players standing between the USMNT and the knockout rounds.
The countdown is nearly over. As the FIFA World Cup kicked off on Thursday, the United States enters Group D with a realistic path to the knockout rounds.
The challenge? Every opponent brings something different.
Paraguay arrives in outstanding form after one of its best qualifying campaigns in decades. Australia remains one of the tournament’s most consistent overachievers, having reached the knockout rounds twice in its last four appearances. Türkiye may have the most talented squad in the group and one of the tournament’s brightest young stars in Arda Güler.
Group D may not have a traditional powerhouse, but it could be one of the World Cup’s most competitive groups. Here’s what to expect from each of the USMNT’s group-stage opponents.
Paraguay
After missing out on the last four World Cups, Paraguay returns to the tournament looking to ruin the American dream. La Albirroja may have the right combination of talent, experience, and team cohesion to do just that.
Head coach Gustavo Alfaro only lost one match during his CONMEBOL qualification campaign, leading Paraguay to a 9-game unbeaten streak featuring wins against tournament favorites Argentina and Brazil. Paraguay’s 24-point qualifying campaign matched Colombia, Uruguay, and Brazil.
Much of Paraguay’s success can be traced to Alfaro, who has turned a team that missed four straight World Cups into one of South America’s toughest opponents. Known for its defensive discipline, La Albirroja uses the resilience that carried it to the 2010 quarterfinals while adding a new generation of technical talent in midfield.
Diego Gómez has emerged as one of the leaders of that movement, while Julio Enciso was expected to be Paraguay’s creative spark before suffering an injury in a pre-World Cup friendly against Nicaragua, putting his availability for the tournament opener in doubt.
Under Alfaro, Paraguay has become one of South America’s most organized defensive teams, using a compact shape and quick transitions rather than dominating possession.
Paraguay enters the tournament in excellent form. La Albirroja will arrive for its opener against the United States fresh off a 4-0 victory over Nicaragua, with four different players finding the net. Despite a difficult club season with Atlanta United, captain Miguel Almirón remains the center of Paraguay’s attack and has contributed to three goals across the team’s five post-qualifying friendlies. If Enciso is unable to play, Almirón and Gómez must take on the responsibility in the final third.
Australia
Australia has become one of the World Cup’s most consistent overachievers. The Socceroos have now qualified for six consecutive World Cups and have reached the knockout rounds in two of their last four appearances, including a Round of 16 run in Qatar that ended with a close 2-1 loss to eventual champions Argentina.
Head coach Tony Popovic took over halfway through the qualification cycle and quickly reinforced the physicality and defensive discipline that have defined Australian soccer for years. Australia may not have the star power of many of the world’s elite nations, but it has built a reputation for frustrating talented opponents.

The next wave of Australian talent is starting to arrive at the right time. Nineteen-year-old winger Nestory Irankunda is one of the country’s brightest prospects, while forward Tete Yengi has impressed during pre-World Cup friendlies. Both players could provide the attacking spark Australia has occasionally lacked in recent tournaments. The return of Harry Souttar also gives Australia a major boost, particularly on set pieces where the tall center back can influence matches at both ends of the field.
The Socceroos enter the tournament looking much like the teams that have made them a difficult out on the world stage. Australia drew Switzerland 1-1 in its final World Cup warm-up and showed the strength that has become its trademark under Popovic. Against the United States, expect a deep, compact defensive shape, plenty of physical battles, and a team comfortable turning the match into a grind. Australia may not be the most talented team in Group D, but its consistency and experience make it a legitimate threat to reach the knockout rounds once again.
Türkiye
If Australia is the group’s most experienced tournament team, Türkiye may be its most talented. After a 24-year absence from the World Cup, the Crescent-Stars return with a generation of players that many supporters believe is capable of producing the country’s best tournament run since its third-place finish in 2002.
A lot of that optimism comes from head coach Vincenzo Montella. Since taking over in 2023, the former Italian international has guided Türkiye to the quarterfinals of UEFA Euro 2024, promotion to Nations League A, and, most importantly, qualification for its first World Cup since 2002.
At the center of it all is Arda Güler, arguably the biggest star in Group D. The Real Madrid midfielder announced himself to the world at Euro 2024 and arrives in North America as one of the tournament’s most exciting young players. Alongside him is Juventus forward Kenan Yıldız, another rising star who has become a key part of Türkiye’s attack. Veteran captain Hakan Çalhanoğlu remains the team’s leader and one of the most dangerous set-piece specialists in the world.
Few teams in Group D can match Türkiye’s technical ability going forward. Montella’s side is comfortable controlling possession and has many players comfortable taking shots in the final third. However, questions remain about whether Türkiye can maintain its level against elite opposition over an entire tournament.
Still, Türkiye reached the Euro 2024 quarterfinals, ended a 24-year World Cup drought, and brings a squad filled with players competing for some of Europe’s biggest clubs. If Güler, Yıldız, and Çalhanoğlu find their rhythm, Türkiye has the talent to not only advance from the group but also emerge as one of the tournament’s surprise teams.
